Our Crops

Abanitu is an organic food farm.  We cultivate a variety of vegetables, small fruits, melons, flowers, gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, and medicinal and culinary herbs.

Our focus is heirloom and open-pollinated vegetable varieties almost exclusively, emphasizing flavor, hardiness and disease resistance.  We specialize in seasonal greens, brassicas and lettuces, but cultivate regional fare ranging from asparagus to zucchini, including several varieties of heirloom tomatoes.

Our small fruits include strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, plums, cherries, peaches, pears, dessert grapes, figs, muscadine grapes, hardy kiwi, apples and persimmons.

We cultivate most culinary herbs, and offer them freshly cut or dried.  Our medicinal herbal offerings concentrate mainly on those that boost the immune system, tonify the nervous system, and enhance mental function.

Our melons (both watermelon and cantaloupe) are making us famous; we've been told many times by customers that Abanitu melons are the best they've tasted.

On a limited basis, we cultivate mushrooms for food and medicinal purposes, including shiitake, maitake and reishi varieties.  This is an area of planned expansion in the near future.

All the flowers and many of the herbs selected for cultivation at Abanitu multi-task as bee pasture, food and habitat for beneficial insects, as well as their appeal at the farmers' markets where we sell.
