Are Chemicals Necessary?

In our experience at Abanitu Organics, not only are chemicals not a requirement for growing great food, they are a serious obstacle to doing so.  The accumulation of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and chemical fertilizers in the soil and water is stressful to plants, making them more susceptible to attack and thereby increasing the need for even more chemicals.  The nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) that is contained in most chemical fertilizers can easily reach toxic levels for plants and the life in the soil, yet they supply only three of the dozens of micro-nutrients required for healthy plant and animal life.

Properly prepared compost, manure crops, crop rotation, soil re-mineralization and inter-cropping can effectively eliminate the need for chemicals, and encourages the presence of beneficial insects that help to protect crops and the animals that depend on them.
